Last week was National Painting Week, sponsored by the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) and Sherwin-Williams paint stores, but don’t worry – it’s never too late to spruce up your home, inside or out.
Choosing new colors can be an overwhelming task, but it’s gotten a lot easier thanks to Smartphone technology. Give the Sherwin-Williams Colorsnap app a spin — you can take a picture of anything you like the color of — your favorite shirt, a pretty flower, or your neighbor’s dining room, for instance — and this app will match it to the closest Sherwin-Williams paint color. (Benjamin Moore offers a similar app, called Color Capture, as well.)
A fresh coat of exterior paint will immediately make any home look more inviting and make a great first impression on potential buyers. Opting for classic neutrals like white, gray and beige is a trend-proof bet that allows a home’s assets to take center stage. This is also true of interior rooms — light colors will brighten up rooms and make them appear larger and cleaner. However, a brightly colored accent wall can create a modern point of visual interest that will set your home apart from the pack, so if you’re into color that’s a good way to achieve it while still staying buyer-friendly. (The Pantone color of the year this year is tangerine, if you’re feeling really bold.)
The best part about painting your home is that it is a relatively inexpensive way to make a big impact. With paint running around $25/gallon, a re-paint is a lot more affordable than a kitchen remodel, and in most cases, it’s something you can do yourself over a long weekend. Statistically, you will likely recoup 50-100% of the painting costs when you sell, so it’s a very good investment as well. And then there’s the benefit that it makes your house likely to sell faster.
So if your house is on the market this spring, consider a new paint job!
