The transformation of River North continues apace with the news from Curbed today that famed Chicago kitsch eatery Ed Debevic’s will be moving to make way for a residential tower. Developer JDL has its sights on the location at 640 N. Wells, where many a Chicagoan has spent a childhood birthday or taken a family visiting from out of town. This isn’t terribly surprising given what’s been happening along that stretch of River North recently, including the demolition of the old Howard Johnson’s on LaSalle and the planned construction of a bold new Latino center one block south, not to mention the extensive redevelopment plans for the former Cabrini Green site.
It seems like this once-overlooked part of the neighborhood is getting hot. (Just a few years ago, the idea of Ed Debevic’s moving would have been hard to believe!)
